March 21st 2007

Well hello class today is the first day of spring (thought you'd want to know:)) Well class started off with mental math as usual.

Then we went further on into the unit of Personal Finance.
We took a couple notes then learned how to do it on microsoft excel.

One of the definitions we did was:

Equity- the difference between the market value of a property and the claims held against it
In other words means, what you own and what the bank owns..

this is a screenshot I took of how to add up the math with the interest and such.
this is another one which explains what questions we should ask when adding everything together..

And the final step we need to do to solve it. Knowing how much the bank charges for interest and everything, as Bender said, no one would probably want to buy a house after paying that much interest.

This is pretty much what we did during class. It was the last day before Spring Break and there was no homework assigned. Hope Ya'll have a great spring break!! Have fun at Eric Clapton Max. TTFN ta ta for now :)

p.s here was something Max showed us about what's going on across the world

March 20/07 Personal Finance

Alright, well first off I would like to ask how anyone feels, or if anyone has any ideas relating to the depth comment of our posts, and how we may Improve. Feel free to comment, and I also invite others from the other side of the share window, to post about what makes them to the posts with the amount of effort that they put into them. I also am trying something new, and hope it works.

mondays class

Well first off i have to say I'm sorry I did not post this yesterday, I have to admit that i did forget, so now I'm doing it while I have a minute.

Yesterday Mr. Max was away therefore we had a sub. Our assignment was to work on a booklet called Personal Finance Review, we were to choose 2 questions out of it and to be working in pairs or a max group of 3.

Test Review

Accuracy for vectors

1.) + or - 3 degrees on direction

2.) + or - 3 tenths on your scale

The unit test is going to be on vectors. All you

will have to know is the Triangle method and

the parallelogram method. There will also be a

bonus question on matrices worth 4 to 6 points.

Just a reminder to Mr. Max to get more
mental math sheets.

A Message To Emna (and Everyone Else)...

Sorry, Emma, couldn't resist....probably wasn't funny even in my head.

So anyway, this has been driving me nuts since Mr. Bredin left after Block 4, mostly because I thought that one of the things I do well is spell. You should have seen how my wife grinned at me at dinner this evening as I related the story, and then how she rattled off
"D-I-L-E-M-M-A" without even thinking about it as she laughed at my expense...Oh poor me.

Sort of pathetic that things like this are important to me...but on a more serious and maybe smug note, at least I'm not the only one...Check out this link. I smell vindication. (I hope I spelled vindication right.)

...oh, and Ben, check Edline.

"Pi" Day/ Max's DILEMMA

Once again, we started off the class with mental math. After that was all done, Max showed us some stuff on the blog, and then gave us some time to work on our homework, which is on Excercise 4, and came around and checked it at the end of class.

Dilemma
The exact definition of dilemma is a state of uncertainty or perplexity especially as requiring a choice between equally unfavorable options.

There is no definition for dilemna, and according to a source on the internet, that spelling has never been in ANY dictionary ever.

I think Mr. Bredin stated it best at the end of class..."No person in there right mind would spell dilemma with an n."

Don't forget the test on Friday!

Advice for Mr. van der Walt

So, Mr. van der Walt, here are some suggestions:

Tuesday, March 13th.

Well, we started off with mental math, which went very well in my opinion! Make sure that the mental math sheets that Mr. Max handed back match your average in edline. Then, we did a homework check on Excercise 4, Questions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Question 4

Question 6

Question 7

Question 8

Question 9

above is an example of what is happening in Question 9

Poly Program
The poly program is something you use to play with shapes and fun stuff like that, and thats about all i know about it right now! If you want to check it out the link for the website is below.

Hey!
Sorry for being late on my post. The poll didn't work out so well, so follow Aaron's lead and just comment on what you think.

Unit test vs. Cumulative..
Test is Friday so make sure to speak up.

Unit Test: One test per Unit
Cumulative: One test that includes questions from previous units.

Since we didn't learn anything new today I'm supposed to contribute something useful. So hopefully this helps someone..

This is a basic picture of all the important things. The circle and the degree measures represent the bearing. The 'N, E, S, W' represent the directions.

For some practice, I took some questions off the archived exams.

A bird travels a distance of 2.5km in a direction of 30 degrees west of north. It than travels 9km in a direction of 42 degrees east of north.
How far and in what direction must it travel to return directly to it's starting point?

The bird is 10km from its starting point and must travel in a direction of 29 degrees west of south.

Don't want to solve it that way? You can always do this! .. creepy. What is all that Mr. Max?

Here's another question that you should probably know how to do:

Thank God Its Friday!

Fridays class began with Mr.Max giving us Mental Max questions. Because this was our last entry we handed them in, with one catch. We got to make two of our worst ones well disappear..yay I was quite excited even though I didn't quite understand at first, but Mr.Max explained it all in the end. So if you weren't there in class be sure to hand in your Mental Math Sheet asap so that your marks can be in before report cards come out!!

Once we handed in our Mental Math sheets, Mr.Max talked about a test?? Yes, a test. Mr.Max gave us a weeks notice that our vectors test will be this Friday, March 16th. This may be a hint..just maybe, that if you aren't understand vectors completely to ask for help or get help. Mr.Max has said over and over that if you are struggling that you can come in the mornings at 8:00am or after school to get help...just make sure you tell him you are going to be coming!! The test will have similar format as our other test. Some of the question may look like the exercises we are doing in class or may come from an old provincial exam, make sure to look at the marking guide. To finish off the end our class Mr.Max assigned the rest of B6,Exercise 3 which includes 4,6,7,8,and 9! If you find that you are done those five questions you can also get ahead and try Exercise 4.
Make sure you do your homework incase of a homework check because you don't want to be wishing in June that you did your homework from the beginning of the semister!!
To sum up, here is what you should remeber to get ready for and do as homework:
-Vectors Test on Friday, March 16!
- Exercise 3,Questions 4,6,7,8 and 9! <(Due Monday, March 12)>
Reminder: If you would like Euklid on your computer at home, let Mr.Max know and he can send you a link to your email for you to use it at home!!
Thats all from me, hope everyone enjoyed their some what warm weekend, and did there homework!!

That Fateful Wednesday

We started the day off with a Mental Math Quiz. But Mr Max had come home rattled when he found out noone did their homework after having 2 days to complete 4 simple questions. Instead of blowing his stack, he corrected the questions with us, going through the steps of each question. I think we all learned alot that day. Not only did we learn about vectors, we learned time management skills.

We only have 3 of the 4 questions on file

.::Question 1::.

.::Question 2::.

.::Question 3::.

I think after that fateful Wednesday, we all learned our lesson. From now on, I hope everyone will finish their homework. :)

The Parallelogram Method

Hello Everyone,

We started out today's class with a Mental Math. Following Mental Math, Mr. Max took a survey of the class to see how people were doing daily. The results was that our class had an average of 61%.

Mr. Max was very upset to hear that many of the students in our class don't know who Eric Clapton is.
For those of you who don't know this is a picture of Eric Clapton. He was born in Ripley, Surrey, England, on March 30, 1945. Personally my favorite song by him would be Tears in Heaven. Have fun at the concert on spring break Mr. Max!

Anyways, back to math...

Today in class we talked about The Parallelogram Method and did one example on Euklid.

Here was the Example:

Not sure if the shopping cart looked like this..

or like this...

Either way, they were still fighting over it...

The Steps for Euklid are:

Step 1: create the first vector, to scale, from some origin.

Step 2: create the second vector, to scale, also from this origin.(vectors are aligned tail-to-tail)

Step 3: create the corresponding parallelogram for the situation by constructing parallels.

Step 4: create an intersection between the two new constructions (parallels)

Step 5: create the resultant, drawn from the origin to the intersection of parallels.

Homework Assignment:

Exercise 3: B6 question #4

Also a reminder: Tomorrow is a work period!

Max's Absence

As Mr. Max was away in Winnipeg, we were given an assignment to finish while the substitute teacher was with us.

Assignment B-6
# 1 , 2 , 3 , 5
We were given this time to complete this work and to complete any incomplete assignments in accelerated math. Since it was my duty to blog for today's class I decided to add in some poems that related to our units in class.
I'm Tired Of Being A Zero Vector
I'm tired of being a zero vector
with no direction
no dimension
and no magnitude;
what i need is another element
- but that would be
a contradiction
of my definition
Breaking Point
a vector is a scalar
that has been pushed
- too far
Well there isn't much else for me to say or anything cool to show you on a day like this so I'll leave this blog as is.

Friday's Post

On Friday's class we of course did another mental math, we were taught a new lesson on Vector Addition, and received information that Mr.Max will not be back to teach us until Wednesday March the 7Th. For he will be away attending a meeting in Winnipeg on how the future of math teaching is going to change...according to what I remember him mentioning about it. So, here's the notes that we did on Friday:
Vector Addition (the triangle method using a scale diagram strategy)
Definition: Vector Resultant
- A vector created to describe an "overall" or "net" situation modelled by two or more different vectors.
[From the tail of the first, to the head of the last]
or also known as "stacking"
Method (Triangle):
1. Create, to scale a vector, drawing the tail on some start point. (origin)
2. From the new origin (the head of the first vector) create another vector with it's tail on the second origin.
3. Repeat (with as many vectors as necessary)
4. Create the resultant vector, from the first origin, to the head of the last vector.

-Also the assignment that is due on Wednesday is
Pg.B-6 1,2,3,5
